Rip came awake in the chair, sunlight streaming in through the slightly parted flaps of the tent, highlighting Jem's beautiful body in his arms. The cream skin beneath his hard, calloused hand felt like soft heaven. He stroked down her leg, curving around her knees to trail down to her delicate foot.

"How long have we slept?" she asked, her voice still dreamy.

He smashed her tighter to his chest as he rubbed his eyes. "Only a little while. It's still a few hours before midday." He wanted to have her again, but he knew they should talk about what was between them.

"Mmm," she murmured, stretching her body against his, distracting him. "Daylight. Too bad it can't always stay light to keep the raptors away."

Rip caressed her hip absently. "Last night, I saw how the Velopeds are getting in." Leaning back to make eye contact, Jemma's tight rear end snuggled into his erection, making her gasp and desire spike through his body.

He tightened his arms around her, and a flare of heat sparked between them. "Wait. Rip." He stroked down her back to cup her buttocks, his attention on her body. She tapped him on the shoulder, her face serious. "We need to talk first. Badly."

He sighed and released her rear end, placing his hands on the chair arms. It was hard to concentrate when all he wanted to do was have her. "Talk about what?"

"About the bond," she said, the words rushing from her mouth.

He tried to focus. "Bond?"

"Between us." She blew out a breath, wiggling as if she would leave his lap.

"Stay." He clasped his hands around her, not wanting her to leave him even to get dressed.

"Have you ever returned to Trolen?"

That got his attention. "No. Why would I?"

"Because then you'd know who you are." Exasperation laced her voice. "If you'd just gone home, you'd know all this and I wouldn't be stuck explaining."

His mother's face flashed through his mind. He tried never to think about her, since she'd ended her own life. First, his father died. Then his mother left their home to visit her friend on Borrus. There, she'd simply stopped eating and had wasted away. Rip had lost all memory of his sire, but he'd never forget those last agonizing days of his mother's life. No matter how much he begged, cried or pleaded, she wouldn't eat or drink. Within a week, she was dead. Just the name of his native planet made the old fear well up inside of him. "I feel like you're about to drop a massive surprise on me, Jem."

She touched the crystal on the cord around his neck. "When you and I were children, a wise woman on Trolen took a piece of your soul and put it into this crystal, so we would know the Goddess Chose us for one another.
